The Curve Editor, Step by Step
This is the part that scares people, and it should not. Open Afterburner and press Ctrl+F to bring up the voltage/frequency curve. You will see a diagonal line of dots climbing left to right. Voltage is the horizontal axis, clock speed is vertical.
1. Pick a target voltage and clock
A good starting point for a lot of modern Nvidia cards is around 900mV. Find the dot sitting at 900 on the horizontal axis. Note the clock it currently promises, then decide the clock you actually want to hold there. For my 3080 I aimed for about 1800MHz at 900mV, which is close to its stock boost.
2. Drag the point up, then flatten the curve
Click the 900mV dot and drag it up to your target clock. Now flatten everything to the right of it. The clean way: hold the point at your target, press Enter to apply, and the curve to the right should clamp to a flat line. If it does not flatten on its own, drag the higher-voltage points down so nothing sits above your target clock.
The flat section is the important bit. It tells the card, do not go above this clock no matter how much voltage is available. That cap is what keeps voltage and heat down.
3. Apply and watch
Hit the checkmark to apply. Your clocks might dip for a second while the card resettles. Load your game and watch the overlay. You want the GPU pinned at your target clock, drawing that lower voltage, running cooler than your baseline.
Finding Your Stable Sweet Spot
Stability is trial and error, but it goes quick. Think of it as two dials: the clock you want and the voltage you feed it. If the card is unstable, you have two moves.
- Lower the clock at the same voltage. Safer temps, slightly less performance.
- Raise the voltage for the same clock. More stable, a bit more heat.

Most gamers land in that balanced band and never look back. Start mild if you are nervous, then walk the voltage down over a few sessions until you find the edge, then step back up one notch.
Locking It In and Real-World Results
Once a profile survives a few play sessions, save it to one of Afterburner's profile slots and enable Apply at startup. Now the undervolt loads with Windows and you never think about it again.
On my cards the pattern holds every time. The 3080 dropped roughly 10-12C and pulled about 50W less at the wall. My brother's 6700 XT went from an audible whine to something he stopped noticing. Neither of us lost a measurable frame in the games we play.
