A Calm Player's Guide to Comfort Settings and Motion Sickness

A plain-language walkthrough of FOV, motion blur, head bob, and the other settings that calm queasiness so you can actually enjoy long sessions.

A friend of mine quit Elden Ring twice before she finished the first map. Not because of the difficulty, and not because of the runebacks. She would play for about twenty minutes, feel the back of her neck go warm and her stomach drop, and have to lie down. She thought she just was not built for big 3D games.

She was wrong. The third time, we sat down together and changed maybe six settings before she pressed start. She played for two hours that night and felt fine. Nothing about her changed. The game changed, or rather, the way the game moved across her screen did.

Sim sickness (the proper term is visually induced motion sickness) is real, it is common, and it is mostly fixable. Below I go through the settings that matter, one at a time, with a concrete example for each and the myth I keep hearing repeated in voice chat. None of this requires new hardware. Most of it takes five minutes in a menu.

Field of View: the single biggest lever

Field of view, or FOV, is how much of the world your character can see at once. A low FOV is like looking through a paper towel tube. A high FOV is closer to how your real eyes work, with a wide spread of peripheral vision.

Here is the concrete example. Console shooters often ship at around 60 to 70 degrees FOV. On a monitor sitting two feet from your face, that narrow cone makes the screen edges stretch and warp as you turn, and that warping is exactly the kind of motion your inner ear hates. Crank it to 90 or higher and the world stops swimming.

The myth I want to kill: people say high FOV is "for sweaty competitive players only." Not true. But comfort and competition want the same thing here. Set it as high as your screen and stomach allow.

Quick start

If a game gives you an FOV slider, put it at 90 to 100 for a standard monitor before you touch anything else. Sit close to a large screen? Go higher. Then test for ten minutes and adjust.

Motion blur: turn it off and forget it exists

Motion blur smears the image when the camera moves quickly, in theory to mimic how film cameras capture fast motion. In practice, on a screen you are staring at, it is one of the worst offenders for nausea.

Picture a fast Valorant turn to clear an angle. With per-object motion blur on, the whole scene smears for a fraction of a second every time you flick. Your eyes are trying to track detail that the game is deliberately hiding. That mismatch is queasy fuel.

The myth here is that blur "looks more cinematic" so it must be better. Cinematic and comfortable are different goals. A film runs at 24 frames and you sit back from it. You sit a foot from your game and react to it. Off is almost always the right call, and as a bonus you see enemies more clearly.

Camera shake, head bob, and the wobble you did not ask for

This is the cluster of effects that simulate footsteps, breathing, explosions, and sprinting by physically moving the camera around. Developers add them for immersion. For a sensitive player they are a fast track to the bathroom.

Head bob is the classic culprit. In a lot of first-person games your view bounces up and down as you walk, like a camera taped to a jogger's forehead. Your body is sitting perfectly still in a chair while your eyes report bouncing. That contradiction is the core of motion sickness.

The mismatch in one sentence

Sim sickness happens when your eyes say "we are moving" and your inner ear says "no we are not." Almost every comfort setting works by shrinking that gap.

Look for sliders or toggles labeled head bob, camera shake, weapon sway, and sprint effects. Turn head bob to zero. Drop camera shake to low or off. The myth is that this "ruins immersion." For some players a steady camera is the only way they get to experience the game at all, which is a lot more immersive than the loading screen they would otherwise be staring at.

Frame rate and stutter: smooth is calmer than pretty

A choppy, stuttering image is harder on your system than a clean one running at modest settings. When frames hitch, the motion on screen jumps in a way real movement never does, and your brain notices.

Concrete example: a busy area in a game running at 35 frames per second with frequent dips will make many people queasy, while the same game locked at a steady 60 feels fine. Steadiness matters more than the raw number. A consistent 60 beats a jittery 80.

So if you are choosing between maxed-out visuals at an unstable frame rate and slightly lower settings at a rock-solid one, pick the stable option for comfort. Turning down a couple of demanding effects is the same skill set I walk through in the aim and performance tuning above; smoother input feels better and reads better.

Watch the dips

Average frame rate lies. A game can average 70 and still stutter into single digits in crowded scenes. Cap your frame rate a little below what your machine can reliably hold, and your eyes will thank you.

The settings menu, section by section

Most games bury these toggles in three or four different menus, which is why people miss them. Here is a quick map of what to hunt for and what to do with each one.

Chromatic aberration and film grain deserve a quick word. They are "stylistic" filters that add color fringing and noise. They do not make you sick on their own for most people, but they add visual mush, and turning them off makes everything crisper. Crisp is calmer.

Your body and your room count too

Settings do the heavy lifting, but they are not the whole story. Where you sit and how you feel before you start both move the needle.

Sit a little farther from the screen if you can. A monitor that fills your entire field of view amplifies every camera motion. A small step back gives your peripheral vision a stable frame of reference, which is the room around the screen.

Lighting matters more than people expect. Playing a dark game in a pitch-black room removes every fixed reference point your eyes can lock onto. A soft lamp or a bias light behind the monitor gives your brain something steady to anchor on.

Session habits

Stop before you feel bad, not after. Once nausea sets in it can linger for hours, so take a short break every 45 minutes or so on a new game. Hydration and a fan blowing cool air both help a surprising amount.

Picking games and genres that fit your tolerance

If certain genres reliably wreck you, that is useful information, not a verdict on whether you are a "real" gamer. Fast first-person movement shooters are the hardest on sensitive players. Slower games are far gentler.

Turn-based and top-down games rarely cause trouble at all. Baldur's Gate 3 and Stardew Valley almost never bother anyone, because the camera is calm and you control the pace. If you are building a queasy-friendly rotation, lean on those and ease into faster titles.

Why do I get sick from games but never from real driving or sports?

Because in a game your eyes see motion while your inner ear feels none. In a real car your inner ear feels the acceleration, so the two senses agree. The screen creates a conflict your body did not evolve for, which is why comfort settings that reduce on-screen motion help so much.

Does a higher refresh rate monitor actually reduce motion sickness?

It can help, because higher refresh rates make fast camera movement look smoother and clearer with less perceived smearing. That said, a steady frame rate matters more than a high one. A 60Hz screen running cleanly will treat you better than a 144Hz screen full of stutter.

Will I ever build up a tolerance, or is this permanent?

Most people do build tolerance with short, regular sessions, the same way sailors get their sea legs. Start with comfort settings dialed in and play in 20 to 30 minute bursts. Stop at the first hint of queasiness so you never train your body to associate the game with feeling awful.

Try these one at a time rather than all at once, so you can feel which fix is doing the work for you. Everybody's trigger is a little different; for my friend it turned out to be head bob more than anything, while for me it is motion blur every time.
